Japanese-Crossword-Puzzle-Like Puzzle Tips

What are these puzzles?  They are the puzzles with these rules:

1. Make each cell white or black.
2. No two black cells may share an edge.
3. All white cells must be connected to each other through their edges.

Apparently, Japanese crossword puzzles follow these rules, hence the name.  There's not too much to say here, but there's a bit that's common to all of them.

Important tip: not only mark if a cell is black, but also mark if a cell is white.

I do this on paper by writing a little x in the cell, and on the computer by filling it with light gray (which I'll do here).

So, say you have this:

Because no black cells can touch, all of the orthogonally adjacent cells are white:

Remember rule 3 as well.  Say you have this:

Because all white cells need to be touching, R2C1 and R4C4 need to be white, because the cell next to them has nowhere else to go:

Now, if you'll notice, R4C2 also needs to be white, because that whole section next to it needs to be connected:

While this can't happen just with those rules above, in these types of puzzles you'll often get a situation where you know one of two cells are black on both sides of a wall.  Here's an example, with the two cells in blue:

(we know what this is, but act like you don't)

Either way, the white cells are NOT going to be connecting between that wall.  The black cell will stop it some way.  So, because of rule 3, it must connect by the bottom:

There's not much else I can think of that can be said about this puzzle type.  There are some things that some types share, but not all types, so I'll just mention those each individually.
